Kelewele is a popular dessert widely consumed in West Africa. It is chopped ripe plantain seasoned with a variety of spices and served alongside a stew, rice, waakye, groundnut, or even just on their own.
What Is Kelewele Made Of?
Kelewele is made with ripe plantains that are peeled, cut into small cubes or bite-size chunks, and seasoned with spices such as Onion, Garlic, Cayenne Pepper, and Ginger. This is then fried until the sugar in the plantain caramelizes and produces brown edges
Kelewele is served as appetizers at events or get-togethers. This spicy fried plantain recipe is easy to make. Ripe or overly ripe plantains are cut into pieces, mixed with spices, and deep-fried in vegetable oil until ready.
Kelewele Recipe
- 6 Ripe Plantains
- 2 bulbs of onion
- A teaspoon of cayenne or chilli pepper
- A tablespoon of grated ginger
- 1 garlic clove(optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg(optional)
- 1 tsp Anise Seed
- Salt to taste
- 1 Maggie cube (optional)
- Vegetable oil for frying
Methods For Preparing kelewele
- Using a sharp knife, cut a shallow line down the length of the plantain and peel back the skin.
- Chop the plantain into small cubes of about an inch size and set aside.
- Blend onions, ginger, garlic, and chilli pepper in a blender or food processor and dilute with water(Make sure to obtain a thicker consistent mixture)
- Blend in your cayenne pepper, anise seed, nutmeg, and salt together, and mix well.
- Mix the plantain pieces with the blended spices in a big bowl, and leave it to rest for 30 minutes to absorb the flavour.
- Heat a large pan with oil for deep frying under medium-high heat until hot.
- Fry the plantain pieces until golden brown (Do not overcrowd the pan, it will cause the plantains to be soggy and absorb excess oil)g the oil.
- Remove and transfer the fried plantains onto a sieve or tissue paper for draining the plantain pieces,
- Lightly dab the plantains with paper towels to soak up any excess oil and serve immediately.
- Serve warm with groundnuts or Cooked rice.
